ABOUT £3,000 has been raised for a speedway rider whose career was ended by a devastating accident.

Parents at Barkisland School organised the day to boost Garry Stead's fund.

Garry, 35, was left paralysed from the waist down in May this year after crashing in a race.

His son Lewis is a pupil at the school on Scammonden Road, Barkisland, and parents helped put on the day, which included a fun run, to help raise funds for Garry's recovery.

Garry, of Brighouse, who broke his back, foot, tibia, fibia and femur in the crash, said: "It has been a traumatic time but you have to be positive. The help and support I have had from the community is absolutely great. I don't know what I would have done without it."
